How does Art and Design contribute towards our overall curriculum intent?

At Feniscowles Primary School, we see Art and Design as an essential component of our  curriculum and integral in developing the 'Feniscowles' Child'.

The study of Art and Design at Feniscowles Primary School has been developed with our school motto of ‘Striving for Excellence’ as its guiding principle. The National Curriculum provides schools with a clear program of study for us to follow. 

At  Feniscowles  Primary School we  believe that the subject of Art  and Design  provides an essential opportunity for children to embrace their creative side whilst building a wide range of knowledge, skills and understanding of the subject.    Art and Design is an important contribution to the development of ‘A Feniscowles Child’ who is able to ‘live life in its fullest’. 

Our aim is to instil in our pupils the belief that they are all artists. We strive to ignite an enjoyment  of art that continues when they leave school, with ‘A Fensicowles Child’ recognising the benefit that creativity through art can bring to one’s mental health and well-being.   

Aims for our pupils  

• To develop an understanding of diverse art forms; drawing, painting, sculptures and other Art and Design techniques.   
• To develop the ability to explore, invent marks and communicate through purposeful drawing in 2D and 3D.   
• To develop  the ability to select and use materials, processes and techniques skilfully.   
• To develop the ability to use visual language skilfully (for example colour, form, line, shape, texture, tone and pattern) to express emotions and interpret observations.   
• To develop  their knowledge of a range of artists, craft makers and designers.  
• To develop  the ability to reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate their own work and the work of others.   
• To allow the imagination to develop with encouragement, help and understanding.   
• To  raise awareness of  career choices linked to the study of art.
